January Sister Spotlight: Kim Drake-Loy

One of our 2019 #Upgrades for our Every Heart Sister Membership is our new Sister Spotlight! Every single month we will feature one of our valued members and share some of what makes their HEART shine!

First up for January, we are excited to spotlight Heart Sister, Kim Drake-Loy. She joined the membership in 2018 and attended her first retreat in October. Kim is an alumni of Trinity University and Texas Tech School of Law. She is actively involved in the Northeast Tarrant County Texas Tech Alumni Group, where she previously served two terms as president and is currently serving as treasurer. Their primary purpose is to raise funds for scholarships and hopefully open educational doors to students that might not have had the opportunity to attend Texas Tech.

I asked Kim to share a little about her passion of helping women. She opened up and shared how making a difference in the lives of women has truly been a recurring theme throughout her adult life. She was fortunate to be involved with the creation of an employee resource group dedicated to women's issues. Her involvement began as serving as a liaison for community outreach, which then morphed into her serving two terms as the organization's president. As her involvement with that group came to an end, she joined forces with the Junior League of Arlington. Her notable placements included serving as Assistant Chair for the Back to School Fair, which gathered diverse community resources and then held a fair for children to get school supplies, haircuts, and other services prior to school starting. Her final placement was as a member of the resource development committee. She describes it as an eye-opening placement, as the Junior League of Arlington had decided to focus its resources exclusively on domestic abuse issues facing women and children.

Fast forward to summer of 2017. After much reflection, Kim realized she needed something new upon which to focus her attention. Through a former colleague, she was introduced to Our Friends Place (OFP.) This incredible organization is committed to helping young women with limited resources and support reach their potential. She immediately knew it was the perfect fit for her. She began her journey with the organization in January 2018 as a board member and member of the volunteer committee. Now in 2019, she is expanding her duties to join the executive OFP committee as the Secretary. In addition, Kim has been selected by The Every Heart Project to be our Outreach Liaison to further the 2019 initiative with Our Friends Place as our sole, partner charity. Our two organizations will be working together throughout the year to connect needs with volunteers and make a real difference in the lives of all involved.

I asked Kim about her feelings regarding the new partnership formed for 2019, and she said with excitement, "I am so thrilled about The Every Heart Project selecting Our Friends Place as its partner for community philanthropy. As we lift each other up in The Every Heart Project, we can share our messages and strengths with Our Friends Place and help them further their reach. Exciting!! I can't wait for the sisters to become more involved and learn about this fantastic group."

On a personal note, Kim is happily married to her husband, Jeff for the past 17+ years. She lovingly describes him as her "rock and biggest supporter." They have continued through the ups and downs of life and look forward to many more journeys together. They are passionate about traveling, food, wine and music, and have frequented several Springsteen and Foo Fighters concerts across the country. Kim proudly says their dogs are their children. They have two boys... both spaniels, named Marco and Artie. She admits they are spoiled, smart as any honor roll student, and love their Mama!

Kim, thank you for being a Heart Sister and serving with your HEART! We are honored to spotlight you and excited for 2019 and beyond!
